2013 QCCA Outdoor Show This Week, Come Meet The Team

Once again the team will have a booth at the QCCA Outdoor show. This show has come to be a traditional yearly event to help kick off the upcoming season. The monies raised from our raffles and donations have been a vital part of helping fund the team for the year. We hope that you will find time to come down this week and meet our team members. It was more than a chilly, breezy day for the 22 boats of anxious young anglers competing in the Argyle Lake Illinois High School Association Sectional Bass Tournament. Temperatures that barely topped 50 degrees coupled with some drizzle and strong winds made for quite uncomfortable conditions, especially for those with bare hands holding fishing rods.

“It was cold as cold could be,” Moline High School senior Devon Gamboe said at the weekend weigh-in. “I had hand warmers in two pockets and in my boots to try to keep warm, but I was still cold.”

However, Gamboe and his partner, junior John Berhenke, didn’t let the chill stop them from catching four keepers weighing a total of 5.13 pounds to win the sectional crown and punch their ticket to the IHSA state championship that will be held early next month.

“We each caught two keepers and together probably about 10 shorts (bass under the 12-inch minimum size limit),” Berhenke said. “We caught fish on jigs, plastic craws and crank baits.”

Also earning a trip to the state finals were teams from Illini West-Carthage (anglers Taylor Blythe, a sophomore, and Harold Northup, a freshman) and Cambridge (anglers Alex VanWatermuelen and Isaak Woodruff, both sophomores) who finished in second and third places, respectively.

“I had the easy job,” MHS coach Tim Albrecht said after the weigh-in. “All I had to do was run the boat and I could keep my hands in my pockets. I’m really proud of our kids, all the kids who fished, it was really uncomfortable out there. Devon and John fished real hard. They just kept grinding away. They kept their lures in the water, which it what it takes to catch fish and win.”

Gamboe and Berhenke will take valuable past experience to the state finals May 9-10 on sprawling Carlyle Lake. Gamboe competed there as both a freshman and junior; Berhenke did so last year as a sophmore.

- Macomb Sectional: In the sport’s four years of state competition, Moline has never failed to reach the finals at Carlyle Lake. This time the Maroons won their third sectional crown. The boat with Devon Gamboe and John Berhenke caught four bass for a combined 5.13 pounds on Argyle Lake. Carthage Illini West was the runner-up with 2bass totalling 2.8 pounds. Cambridge was the third qualifying team with the tandem of Alex VanWatermuelen and Isaak Woodruff nabbing 2 fish for 2.395 pounds.

The Harvester bass club hosted a open QC COVERAGE INSURANCE Spring Early Bird “BIG BASS BONANZA” held March 31st, 2012. Four members of the Moline High School team paired up with local well known fisherman. Paul Malone, Randy Garner, Scott and Adam Crigger all volunteered their time to take the boys with them to fish the tournament. The field had 38 boats total with many local well known anglers. The team of Paul Malone and John Berhenke took 2nd place honors. Randy Garner and Cameron Verbeke took 4th place.

Intersquad Tournament Results April 3, 2012

Today a few team members squared off against the coaches in a 3 hours mini-tournament. In the first tournament the team of John Berhenke and Matt Blair tied the the team of Devon Gamboe and Cameron Verbeke with both teams having a five fish limit of 10lbs 2 oz. The coaches boat had a total 5 fish limit of 12lbs 6oz.

After a short break the three teams fished again in a 1.5 hour intersquad tournament. The winning team was John Berhenke and Matt Blair with a 5 fish weight of 11 lbs 3 ozs. The second place team was the coaches boat with a 5 fish weight of 10 lbs and 2 oz. In third place was the team of Devon Gamboe and Cameron Verbeke with a 3 fish total weight of 6 lbs 2 ozs.
